At 2 a.m., I received a request to overhaul a packing assembly line—this soy milk company owner really is a workaholic.

I’m Manager Chen. One day last month, around two in the morning, my phone buzzed—it was a video sent by Boss Wang, who runs a soy milk business in Fujian.

Clicking to watch, the scene shows a corner of the workshop: several workers are stacking Tetra Pak soy milk cartons into boxes, with stacks of opened cartons that have since collapsed nearby, and on the floor lie a few defective boxes—labelled crookedly and set aside. The video ends with a close-up of a labeling machine, its label stuck at an angle, wrinkled and peeling, revealing a strip of white edge.

Below it was a single sentence: “Old Chen, this batch of goods is scheduled to ship to the South China warehouse tomorrow morning. Quality control says the labels are non‑compliant and will be returned for re‑labeling. I’m standing by in the workshop right now—exhausted.”

I didn’t wish him good night—I just called him straight away. On the other end of the line, his voice was hoarse as he explained that this was already the third time this month: the cardboard boxes wouldn’t stand upright during the unpacking stage; when the packers got busy, they’d miss a few items; the sealing tape was crooked and uneven; and the labeling machine kept misaligning. The kicker was that his line was still semi‑automatic—unpacking relied on workers prying open the boxes by hand, sealing was done with manual pressure, weight checks were performed by lifting each package, and palletizing required workers to carry and stack the goods.

 

 

Boss Wang said, “Old Chen, my soy milk tastes just as good as the big brands—except the packaging always lets me down. Whenever the supermarket inspectors come by and see how we package it in the workshop, they just shake their heads and walk away.”

I hung up the phone and thought for a long time. Which soy‑milk producer hasn’t struggled every step of the way—soaking the beans, grinding them into slurry, boiling the mixture, and finally bottling it? After pouring so much effort into perfecting the product, to stumble at the very last hurdle—packing the boxes—just isn’t worth it.

Later, I presented a proposal to Boss Wang—namely, this very line of ours. Fully automatic soy milk boxing production line — From unpacking to palletizing, a single machine handles all six steps, eliminating the need for workers to bend over throughout the entire process.

 

Let me mention a few practical points:

Fully automatic unpacking This step employs vacuum suction cups combined with a forming mold. As soon as the cardboard is fed in, it’s sucked open, expanded into shape, the bottom folded, and securely locked—all in one seamless motion. The resulting carton stands perfectly square and stable, unlike those manually bent, which often end up skewed.

Packing The process is equipped with visual counting: once the number of boxes per carton and the arrangement are set, the system runs according to the established standards, eliminating the risk of undercounting or overcounting.

Seal the box It uses a hot-melt adhesive dot‑spraying and pressure‑rolling process, ensuring the tape adheres smoothly and the seal is secure—so you’ll never have that “the bottom comes undone halfway through” kind of mishap.

Weighing inspection This step is particularly practical. Boss Wang has been burned before—once, a batch was packed and shipped with one row of soy milk missing, only to be flagged by end‑users. Now our checkweighers perform real‑time weighing on the line; any box that’s underweight or overweight is automatically rejected and an alarm sounds. Relying on machines for quality control is far more reliable than human oversight.

Labeling It also features fully automatic positioning and labeling, with precision controlled to within a millimeter, ensuring labels are neatly aligned—enabling seamless inspection at the supermarket.

Finally is Palletizing Six-axis robots automatically pick and stack pallets according to a pre-set stacking pattern, leaving the pallets neatly arranged. In the past, Mr. Wang’s factory required three strong workers to rotate shifts for palletizing, with lumbar strain an almost inevitable occupational hazard. Now, with machines taking over, operators simply monitor the display screen.

 

 

After this line went live, Boss Wang sent me another video a couple of days ago: in the workshop at ten p.m., the lights were on but there was no one around—only the machines running on their own. He followed up with a voice message: “Old Chen, I can finally sleep through the night now.”

To be honest, the soy milk business is low-margin and relies on volume. If the packaging line stalls for even a minute, the warehouse, logistics, and retail outlets all come to a halt. Rather than having workers pull all‑night shifts with inconsistent quality, it’s better to hand over the packing process to machinery—it doesn’t call in sick, doesn’t shake, and doesn’t get cranky. You set the parameters, and it just does the job, every time.
