Standing at the entrance of the packing workshop, he pointed to the seven or eight workers inside—huddled around a long table, carefully transferring eggs from trays into cardboard boxes.
No one spoke; all that could be heard was the clatter of egg cartons bumping against one another.
The boss crouched down, picked up a cracked egg, turned it over in the palm of his hand, and said, “Manager Dai, we broke more than sixty this morning. And that’s just what we could see—those that shattered when packed into boxes won’t be discovered until the customer opens them.”
He stood up, brushed the dust off his hands, and added, “I’ve been raising chickens for ten years—every step, from hatching the chicks to egg production, has demanded my utmost care. Yet when it came to packing them into boxes, relying on people to carry and arrange the eggs by hand, even though the eggs themselves were fine, I still couldn’t shake the nagging doubt in my heart.”
I didn’t rush to respond. In his workshop, I could see clearly the rows of long tables—workers’ posture as they sorted eggs: bending down to pick an egg from its tray, then swiftly placing it into a grid in the cardboard box, repeating this thousands of times a day. A little too much force or a quick turn, and the shell would crack. And with no cushioning at the bottom of the carton, the first two layers of eggs pressed against those below; after the jolts of long-distance transport, when you opened the box, you’d find broken shells, sticky residue, and eggs smashed against one another. Even under the best conditions, the spoilage rate was barely two percent; at worst, it could climb to five.
This batch of goods from Lao Zhou is primarily supplied to supermarkets and community‑group‑buying platforms within the province. Community‑group‑buying customers are especially sensitive to packaging damage: when group leaders post photos in the chat, any customer who spots cracked eggs will return the entire box.

The equipment we installed for him is actually quite simple, consisting of just two processes— Fully automatic egg tray stacking and boxing 。
In the past, stacking egg trays was entirely manual: workers would carefully stack the filled trays one on top of another, piling them high before shoving them into cartons. A slight misalignment during stacking could cause the eggs at the bottom to crack under pressure. Our machine employs flexible gripping and vibratory sorting: trays arrive on a conveyor belt, are automatically separated and stacked layer by layer, with each layer naturally isolated by an inner cardboard liner. Gripping force is precisely controlled to prevent any crushing of the eggs. Once stacked, the entire tray assembly is advanced into the carton, which has a pre‑installed corrugated paper cushioning at the bottom, ensuring that no impacts occur during the packing process.
At first, Old Zhou was rather uneasy and deliberately selected fifty cartons for a comparative test. The batch packed by hand had a breakage rate of 3.6 percent upon arrival and unpacking, while the machine‑packed batch registered a mere 0.4 percent. He called me and said, “Manager Dai, 0.4 percent—I can hardly believe it.”
Later, he did some calculations: In the past, eight workers packed eggs into cartons, producing 800 cartons a day; now, one operator monitors the machine and turns out 2,200 cartons daily. With a reduced breakage rate and lower labor costs, the supermarket chain has even proactively raised its purchase price by one mao, citing the improved quality of the incoming goods.
